Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Founder of the Sikh faith. This portrait was commissioned by Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji and is believed to be a true likeness of Guru Ji. There is a steely determination in this portrait which is lacking in many other pictures, where Guru Ji is normally depicted as solemn and frail. Remember, Guru Ji traveled the length and breadth of India and went as far as Kuwait and Iran preaching a message of love and tolerance.

Quazi Nur Muhammed who accompanied the Afghan invader Ahmad Shah Durrani in 1764-65 had to concede the following qualities about the Sikhs in his Jang Namah journal :

If you wish to learn the act of war, come face to face with them in the field. They will demonstrate it to you in such a way that one and all will praise them for it .....Truly they are like lions in battle and, in times of peace, they surpass Hatim in generosity. In no case would they slay a coward, nor would they put an obstacle in the way of a fugitive. They do not plunder the wealth and ornaments of a woman.
