Knowledge is power.
Q. Was Guru Nanak Dev Ji a muslim ?

When Guru Nanak Dev Ji had his first communion with God, the Almighty blessed him and sent him to this world to spread His message, the first words uttered by Guru Sahib Ji was “Neither am I Hindu nor Muslim” from the outset Guru Sahib Ji distanced himself from these faiths as both were lacking.
Many times in Guru Sahib Jis bani the mussalmaan is admonished and chastised for his bigoted nature.

Aasaa:
I am Your humble servant, Lord; Your Praises are pleasing to my mind.
The Lord, the Primal Being, the Master of the poor, does not ordain that they should be oppressed. ||1||
O Qazi, it is not right to speak before Him. ||1||Pause||
Keeping your fasts, reciting your prayers, and reading the Kalma, the Islamic creed, shall not take you to paradise.
The Temple of Mecca is hidden within your mind, if you only knew it. ||2||ang 480

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born into a Hindu family, his father was Mehta Kalu and mother was Mata Tripta Ji, Guru Ji was blessed with two sons, Sri Chand Ji and Lakhmi Das Ji. Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s name comes from the prevalent names of the times but cannot by any stretch of the imagination be interpreted as a muslim name. Guru Ji’s children had very traditional names and again are not in any way muslim names. Although born into a Hindu family Guru Nanak Dev Ji rejected its customs and traditions. Guru Ji refused to wear the ‘janeu’ sacred thread and refused ‘tilak’ on his forehead. Guru Nanak Dev Ji enjoyed the company of holy persons, be they Hindu or muslim this did not matter because Guru Ji recognised the divine spirit present in all. This is the misconception many Hindu and Muslim friends have, just because Guru Ji uses the names of God that are traditionally used by Islam then it is somehow regarded as in praise of Islam. Many times Guru Ji admonishes the Musallman for their intolerance and misguided ways.

First Mehla:
The clay of the Muslim's grave becomes clay for the potter's wheel.
Pots and bricks are fashioned from it, and it cries out as it burns.
The poor clay burns, burns and weeps, as the fiery coals fall upon it.
O Nanak, the Creator created the creation; the Creator Lord alone knows. ||2|| Ang466

He did not dress like a muslim as some people try to portray , Guru sahib Ji dressed as a holy man, which meant a chola of khuddar (rough low grade material) and a pair of wooden sandals or Kharama. On his travels Guru Sahib Ji did travelled westwards, but never to a Hajj. This is a very important point as many people say that only muslims are allowed to go to Mecca / Madina and Guru Ji would have been barred from entering. Guru Ji had previously travelled east to the great pilgrimage sites of the Hindus - Hardward, Benaras, Varanasi, and other places of Hindu and Buddhist importance, are we now to also assume that Guru Ji was a Hindu or a Buddhist because he visited these places ? The truth is that Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s mission, as propagated by God, was to travel the four corners of the land and promote the True path. It is to Guru Ji’s credit and true conviction that he travelled to places that were often hostile and dangerous, populated by ignorant zealots. But with Guru Ji’s unique way of teaching even the hearts made of stone were melted.

Guru Ji clearly states :

"
I do not make pilgrimages to Mecca, nor do I worship at Hindu sacred shrines. I serve the One Lord, and not any other. ||2|| I do not perform Hindu worship services, nor do I offer the Muslim prayers. I have taken the One Formless Lord into my heart; I humbly worship Him there. ||3||”
(Ang 1136)

After this how can anyone be in doubt that the reason to travel to Mecca was not for hajj but to put those people who put so much faith in blind ritual on the true path of God. Guru Sahib Ji travelled to the west from the Punjab making his way towards the muslim places of learning and putting people on the path of God. The city of Mecca was not developed during the time of the Guru. It was a vast desert land and people could commute freely unlike now. Only until recently Saudi Arabia has become rich with the oil money and developed as a result.

Guru Nanak Sahib Ji is neither the first nor the last non-Muslim to visit or infiltrate Mecca. The most famous incident of a non-Muslim visiting Mecca was the visit by the British explorer Sir Richard Burton in 1853. Burton disguised himself as an Afghani Muslim to visit and write Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al Madinah and Mecca. Therefore, how can it be impossible for Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, who is ‘Akaal Roop’, the embodiment of the Divine Light of God, to visit Mecca? The whole land belongs to God, so how can the Living Image of God, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji be stopped traveling anywhere in the world. God or God’s power cannot be limited. As Guru Ji approached Mecca the sun was setting and Guru Ji decided to rest a while. Guru Sahib Ji slept deliberately with his feet towards the Kaaba, this was not an insult to Islam as some would think but a way to gently provoke peoples beliefs. Anyway, would a muslim ever deliberately point his feet to the kaaba? When challenged by the local Imam called Jiwan, Guru Ji replied “point my feet where God is not.” Upon moving Guru Ji around so that his feet faced the other way the Imam found to his surprise that Guru Ji’s feet were still pointing towards the Kaaba. He did it again and again but each time the feet were still pointing to the Kaaba, thus showing that God resided everywhere and that is was our foolish and bigoted minds that saw him in one place or set of people. Hardly the actions of a Muslim. This incident is doubted by some and sight the argument of “How can this happen? How can Mecca rotate like this?”

One must first understand the stature of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru Ji was Akaal Saroop, the embodiment of the divine light, spinning Mecca was a very small feat indeed. In Guru Jis travels on many occasions Guru Ji performed these types of incidents to show people the way, so this was certainly not an unusual incident.

Bhai Gurdas Ji, eminent Sikh scholar whose compositions’ have a very special place in Sikhism writes about this incident in Vaar number one. In these verses Bhai Gurdas describes the visit of Baba Nanak to Mecca. Donning blue clothes, holding a stick in one hand, book under the arm pit and a lota (jug) Baba reaches Mecca and relates the well known anecdote about Guru Nanak keeping his feet towards the Mehrab at night.

Mullah named Jiwan hits him with his leg saying that who is this Kafir keeping his feet towards the house of God and holding Nanak's legs pulls them to change their direction and sees the "Mecca moving in the same direction". They asked Baba Nanak to open and search in his book and tell them as to who is better, Hindu or Muslim. Baba replied to the Haj Pilgrims that without good deeds both would come to grief. Both Hindus and Muslims would not be accepted in the court of the Lord. In their verbal duals they denounce Raam and Rahim. The world is following the ways of the Satan. Baba won over everyone. Wherever you go in the world you would not find a place where Baba was not known. From East to the West, all nine divisions of the earth bowed to him (Nanak).

On Guru Ji’s travels through Bhagdad his companion Mardana would play the rabab and Guru Sahib Ji would sing about the infiniteness of God and His Creation, wherein occurred the following expression:

“ there are numerous patals (earths) and innumerable akashs (sky).”

when some Muslim who was listening to it realised what was being sung (the Qu'ran mentions only seven earths and seven skies) he reported the blasphemy to the Sajjdanashin of the Shrine of Pir Dastagir, Abdul Qadir Jilani. Meanwhile an agitated crowd gathered on the spot. The people were on the verge of throwing stones when they heard the Guru’s divine invocation. The people in remorse went to their Pir and told him of the presence of a holy man.The Pir, having reached the place, enquired from Mardana who the holy man was. He was told that he was Nanak who had rejected all others except one God who was all pervading on earth, sky and in all four directions. Guru Nanak Dev Ji had many discourses with the holy men and they were convinced that Guru Ji was truly and man of God. Before his departure Guru Ji was presented with a chola (robe) as a token of respect and the high regard the holy men held Him, on which verses in Arabic were inscribed. This chola lies preserved in the Gurdwara at Dera Baba Nanak, in Pakistan. The chola was given to Guru Sahib Ji by his devotees in Bagdhad and Guru Sahib Ji took it in the spirit in which it was given, no more. Pir Babhol, a Sufi saint was also deeply influenced by Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

If for any reason this robe held anymore significance other then as a gift to Guru Nanak De Ji then it would have either been hidden or destroyed a long time ago, but Sikhism being a true path of openness and transparency displays this artefact for all the world to see, we have nothing to hide come view the robe presented to Guru Ji as a gift from a devotee and nothing else. Upon Guru Ji’s travels Guru Nanak kept a pothi (small book) in which were written down all shabads composed by him, these were kept safe and handed down to the subsequent Gurus.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was well educated and conversant in Hindi, Persian, Fasri and Sanskrit, he was no illiterate, and the words of Guru Nanak Dev Ji can be relied upon to be 100% accurate as the message of the Almighty. Guru Ji never carried the Koran or a prayer mat, why would he? He had rejected Islam from the outset. When at Mecca the local Imam asked Guru Sahib Ji to do kalma with him. As the Imam started his kalma Guru Ji did not, and stood to one side. Upon finishing, the Imam in his fury asked Guru Ji the meaning of this, Guru Ji said to him “What is the use of meaningless ritual when your mind was someplace else trying to work out how to get the best price for your horses.” The Imam realised his folly and saw in Guru Ji the true light burning bright and he was shamed.

One last point to note. Here are a number of quotes from the Quran. In all honesty can anyone seriously believe that Guru Nanak Dev Ji who promoted equality and harmony and saw good in all people could possible proscribe to a faith that promoted the opposite?

"Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends. They are friends with one another. Whoever of you seeks their friendship shall become one of their number. Allah does not guide the wrongdoers." (5:49, Quran)

"Mohammed is Allah's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another." (48:29, Quran)

"When the sacred months are over slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them. If they repent and take to prayer and pay the alms-tax, let them go their way. Allah is forgiving and merciful." (9:5, Quran)

Man have authority over women because Allah has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because Allah has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them." (4:34, Quran)

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, beat them; but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means: For Allah is Most High, great (above you all). (Quran, 4:34)

Furthermore, Muhammed also encouraged the rape of captured women in front of their husbands:

“ Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said: The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) sent a military expedition to Awtas on the occasion of the battle of Hunain. They met their enemy and fought with them.  They defeated them and took them captives.  Some of the Companions of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) were reluctant to have intercourse with the female captives in the presence of their husbands who were  unbelievers.  So Allah, the Exalted, send down the Qur'anic verse: "And all married women (are forbidden) unto you save those (captives) whom your right hand possess."[Surah 4:24] ...Sunan Abu Dawud, Book V, Chapter 711, Number 2150”

Now you tell me in all honesty, can you ever think that Guru Nanak Dev Ji the greatest soul ever to walk this earth whose mere glance sent one in a fit of divine ecstasy would ever follow Mohammad and his teachings?

Guru Nanak Dev Ji, was the greatest teacher of the world who brought forward true knowledge and made no compromises in his principles. Guru Ji found the prevailing thoughts of the time to be a seething mass of moral putrefaction. He detected among their elements rituals and superstition, and he struck at the root of these problems by demanding truth in faith and spirit in worship. Guru Ji cleared away everything that inhibited the relationship between God and human. Guru Ji held out no promises in this world or even in the next world. Guru Ji taught that the idea of life, the measure of salvation, is not happiness or peace of mind. To serve God and be able to love Him is in itself better than happiness, though it may be with wounded feet, bleeding brows, and laden with sorrow.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji separated Vedantic philosophy from religion, and declared it to be a mere gymnastics of the mind. Guru Ji showed that religion is less a matter of intellect and more a matter of spirit. The practice of Yoga may do very well for emptying the mind of desires, but it only gives a negative result. Guru Nanak Dev Ji substituted music, the singing of God's praises (Shabad Kirtan), for meaningless rituals as a means of linking the soul of humans with God.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji also helped greatly improve existing spiritual rules of conduct. There are two sorts of duties: (1) what we ought to do and (2) what we ought not to do. World religions had very early recognized the latter. "Thou shall NOT kill and Thou shall NOT do this or that.....this was all that was understood by the word Dharma or duty. This emphasis on the negative side of virtue led to the adoption of asceticism in the east as the highest ideal of life, which ultimately means the negation of all manly duty. Guru Nanak Dev Ji preached a higher truth. To him love was active service, and his disciples soon profited from this teaching. There is no higher record of service in history than that shown by the Sikhs, who were taught to annihilate the thought of self and utilize all their energy in the service of God and humility. No one loved God and humanity more than Guru Nanak Dev Ji. By the Guru's grace, may we all be blessed to carry Guru Nanak Dev Ji's mission into the future.

Q Sikhism is a "man made" religion hence is not a real religion as such and is Guru Nanak Dev Ji a false prophet ?

It is claimed the Quran was revealed through Muhammad Ji, the chosen Messenger and that the Angel Gabriel came to him, like the other Prophets to give the good news of their Prophet hood. Some fundamentalist Muslims claim Guru Nanak was a normal holy man who was revered by Hindus and Muslims alike, however not a Prophet or Messenger of God like Muhammad Ji.

As for Gabriel informing the prophets, the Gurus were far above the angels. Guru scriptures tell us that angels are finite creatures and seek the dust of Gursikhs. It is said that Hazrat Muhammad became the Messenger of God at the age of 40. However, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji was born the embodiment of the Truth, the Image of God. For Guru Nanak Dev Ji there was no intermediate entity, be it an angel or otherwise, Guru Nanak Dev Ji received his message direct from the Almighty and none else, can anyone else match this?

We have one intermediary, Gabriel, who supposedly conveyed the message, but who wrote his message down? Muhammad Ji was illiterate. So do we now have a second person who Muhammad dictated to? We now have a chain of four – God, Gabriel, Muhammad and a possible scribe. It is almost like Chinese whispers and could the scribe or scribes be trusted to write down exactly what was said? Maybe that is why there are so many grammatical errors on the Quran.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was ordered to the Almighty’s court when he was still at a tender age, where Guru Ji was given his mission. God recited the first part of the Japji Sahib known as the Mool Mantra to Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

One Universal Creator God. The Name Is Truth. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying, Beyond Birth, Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace ~
Chant And Meditate:
True In The Primal Beginning. True Throughout The Ages.
True Here And Now. O Nanak, Forever And Ever True. ||1||

Guru Nanak Sahib Ji was informed of his duty by the Almighty Lord Himself, not by any angel:

॥੧॥ ਸੁਧੁ

“Pauree: I was free of work, when Vaheguru took me into His service and gave the (true) work of being minstrel. Right from the start, Vaheguru gave me His Hukam (Order) to sing His Praises day and night. Vaheguru, my Lord and Master summoned me, His minstrel, to the True Mansion of His Presence. (Vaheguru,) the Image of True Praise and Glory, gave me the Siropaao, robe of honour. The spiritual-life giving Name, Amrit Naam, the True Name, which gives eternal spiritual life, has become my food (for my soul‘s support). Those who follow the Guru's Teachings, who eat this food (of ‘Amrit Naam’) with satisfaction, obtain peace. His minstrel, (Guru Nanak Sahib jee), spreads His Glory, singing and vibrating the Word of His Shabad (meaning, enjoying the ecstasy of Naam). O Nanak! Praising the True Lord, one obtains the Perfect Lord. ||27||Shudh||”
(Ang 150)

The issue here lies with the question of “prophet hood”. Guru Nanak Sahib ji was so above prophet hood, for Guru Ji was a Satguru, the True Guru. This is MUCH more than a mere simple prophet. A prophet by default is one who has the ability to reveal prophecies. Mohammed Ji had the Quran revealed to him through an intermediary the angel Gabriel, but Satguru Nanak Dev Ji received revelations directly from God.

Satguru, Guru Nanak spoke DIRECT revelations from God and makes this abundantly clear when he says:

"O Lalo! As the Lord’s word comes to me so I deliver it."
(Ang 722)

"I myself know not what to say; all I speak is what the Lord commands."
(Ang 763)

“Whatever you ask of me, so Nanak your servant speaks” Sukhmani Sahib.

For those who say “Did Guru Nanak Dev Ji say that he was a prophet? " then the answer is that Guru Ji was so much more then a mere prophet but Guru Ji was so humble and without ego that they regarded themselves the dust of the Lord. What about " Did they intended to start a new faith”, then the answer is a definite YES. As one can see repeatedly Guru Ji says that whatever God asked him to say only this is what Guru Nanak Dev Ji repeats, it so follows that Guru Ji intended to start the true faith amongst the lost souls on earth, this was his intention from the outset. Why else would Guru Ji keep all his utterances and revelations written down in a pothi or small book? If Guru Ji did not intend to start a new faith why create such masterpieces as Japji Sahib when the vedas and Qurans already existed ? The reason was simple God instructed Guru Nanak Dev Ji to show the true way, not the middle way, not a way which was part Hindu part Muslim but the True way which both these faiths had lost.

People have said the following : "When a person claims Prophet hood, this claim must then be verified. Prophets throughout history have brought miracles to demonstrate to their people (Moses, Abraham, David, and Others, may peace be upon them all). For example Moses spilt the Red Sea, David was able to melt metal in his hands, and Abraham was able to withstand fire. These miracles have been verified both through scriptures and through science."

One would be interested in knowing how these so-called miracles were verified through science? Were there scientific studies carried out on the veracity of these miracles when they were carried out? Was the parting of the red sea scientifically verified and by whom? When the mountain moved to Muhammad was this scientifically verified by independent authorities, I think not.

Spiritual powers, otherwise known as “ridhi sidhis” are common in the Indic tradition. Anyone who meditates sufficiently does gain certain powers. The Sikh Gurus however told the Sikhs to shun their use and only used them sparingly and only then to illustrate a point. Miracles that take place by the will of God and by his order are however accepted.

“That alone is spirituality, and that alone is miraculous power, which the Lord spontaneously bestows.”
(Ang 633)

There have been a number of such miracles attributed to the Sikh Gurus and their proof exists even today in local legend and physical evidence. In Hasan Abdal, Pakistan there exists to this day a massive boulder with the palm print of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji. This boulder was rolled down on to him by one fakir called Wali Kandhari from a great height and was stopped with Guru Ji’s one hand. Thousands of pilgrims visit this Gurdwara and look in awe at the site of Guru Ji’s hand print.

Even in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the coming of Babar (the Mughal invader) and the eventual defeat of the Mughals is prophesied by Guru Nanak Sahib Ji and proven to have been absolutely correct.

Coming in seventy-eight (1521 C.E.), they will depart in ninety-seven (1540 C.E.), and then another brave man will rise up. Nanak speaks the Word of Truth; he proclaims the Truth at this for it is now the time for truth ||2||3||5||”
(Ang 723)

The fact is however Sikhism rejects just miracles as proof of divinity or “prophet hood”. Miracles are a cheap way of winning support from people. The true miracle is changing the self-centred mind to become God-centred and invoking the love of God in people. Guru Nanak Sahib Ji made murders, cannibals, thugs, and bandits become Godly through piercing their hearts with love and the power of Naam and Baani.

The Christian definition of a false prophet is one who falsely claims the gift of prophecy, or who uses that gift for demagogy or evil ends. The label 'prophet' can be extremely subjective: Without exception, one who is considered a 'true' prophet by some people, is simultaneously considered a 'false' prophet by others. As we have seen previously Guru Nanak Dev Ji was not a prophet, hence cannot be a false prophet, but was the embodiment of the True Lord on earth. In fact Jesus never claimed himself to be the messiah, this was bestowed upon him three hundred years later at the council of Nicea 325AD.

One of the most debated issues of the Bible, which is heatedly contested among modern Christian denominations, is whether sin can be passed from one generation to another (some Christian sects even teach that humans are born with inherited sins all the way back from Adam, while others do not), a notion that is totally rejected by Sikhism. These contentious disagreements stem from the Bible's own contradictory statements on the subject:

Deuteronomy 23:2, Isaiah 14:21-22, and Exodus 20:5 all assert that the iniquities of the fathers are passed down through their descendants, while Deuteronomy 24:16 and Ezekiel 18:20 state the opposite.

". . . God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man."
(James:1:13)
"And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham."
(Genesis 22:1)

". . . for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger forever."
(Jeremiah 3:12)
"Ye have kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burn forever. Thus saith the Lord."
(Jeremiah 17:4)

Q. Sikhs revere a false scripture not a revelation from God. Bhagats and Saints have contributed to the Guru Granth Sahib proof that this is not from God, but from the collective writings of men.

Guru Granth Sahib Ji is a divinely revealed scripture. There are many occasions when this is made clear in Guru Granth Sahib Ji :

jaisee mai aavai khusum kee baanee thaisurraa kuree giaan vae laalo ||
As the Word of the Forgiving Lord comes to me, so do I express it, O Lalo. (p722).

sathigur kee baanee sath sath kar jaanuhu gurasikhuhu har kuruthaa aap muhuhu kudtaaeae ||
O GurSikhs, know that the Bani, the Word of the True Guru, is true, absolutely true. The Creator Lord Himself causes the Guru to chant it. (p308)

There are many more examples where it is made clear that the bani in Guru Granth Sahib is the word of God.

In Guru Granth Sahib Ji, there is also the bani composed through different bhatts (bards) and bhagats who were Sikhs of the Guru and inspired to recite as well. The Bhatts were given initiation by the Guru and although they were a wandering group of minstrels, they ended up staying with the Guru for the rest of their lives, singing his praises. They describe the mystical experiences and sights they've seen and show how amazing and great Guru Nanak is. Let us not forget that the Bhagats were no ordinary men, their spirituality was of the highest order and their Bhagat bani in Guru Granth sahib Ji is not found in any of their own collections. For example, Bhagat Kabir's bani in Guru Granth Sahib Ji is not found in his Beejak or any of his collected works, it is unique to Guru Granth Sahib Ji because it is the word of God.

The Bani they recited after becoming Sikhs is the one in Guru Granth Sahib Ji and not found in any of their works.

The notion that the Gurus ‘borrowed’ from other religious texts in also false. The Gurus bani rejects time and time again all other religious texts, so why would it include passages from them? The belief that Guru Granth Sahib contains any passages from other religious texts or translations of them is totally false. Guru Arjun Dev Ji personally overlooked all aspects of the compilation of Guru Granth Sahib Ji and whose shabads are the most. These were direct revelations from God as was all the bani from all the Gurus and Bhagats.

This is very much contrary to some other texts that was compiled many years after the prophet ascended the heavens. In fact the prophet was illiterate so how could he have written down or understood any alleged revelations to him?

Actually the Sahib Siri Guru Granth sahib is the only religious composition written by its prophets, i.e. The Guru’s themselves.

No other religion can claim this. The Quran was written not by a prophet, but 50 years after Mohammed passed away. Mohammed himself was illiterate so who did the Angel Gabriel actually convey his message to and who wrote it down? Getting the message directly from God is a little different from getting the message from one His angels, don't you think ?

The Bible was written by the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, none of them contemporaries of Jesus and written at least 50-100 years after Jesus.

Siree Raag
In speaking, in seeing and in words, remain immersed in the Shabad.
The Word of the Guru's Bani vibrates throughout the four ages. As Truth, it teaches Truth.
Egotism and possessiveness are eliminated, and the True One absorbs them into Himself.
Those who remain lovingly absorbed in the True One see the Mansion of His Presence close at hand. ||3||ang 35

Guru Granth Sahib Ji does not narrate the life story of Guru Nanak Dev Ji , but each and every word is dedicated to the Glory of the Almighty Divine Being only. It is not a reproduction of earlier religions, but the Divine Word (Gurbani) came to the Gurus, and 15 Bhagats, 17 Bards, & 4 devotees (who all shared the same Dharam of Naam & Gurmat), direct from God. Guru Nanak Ji stated that it was not his philosophy, it was not his understanding and it was not his thinking, but the Word was coming to him direct from God and he was simply delivering His message to the world. As he confirms:

O Lalo, as comes the Divine Word from the Lord to me, So do I narrate it.' (Raag Tilang Mohalla 1, p-722)

'I have said what Thou commandeth me to say.' (Raag Wadhans Mohalla 1,p-566)This was repeatedly confirmed and emphasized by all the Gurus in their Bani such as:'From God springs ambrosial Gurbani The exalted Guru narrates and preaches the same to the world.' (Raag Majh Mohalla 3, p-125)'This Word comes from Him, Who hath created the World.' (Mohalla 4, p-306)'This Word that hath come from God, It dispelleth all woes and worries.' (Raag Sorath Mohalla 5, p-628)'I speak but the Will of the Lord, For the Lord's devotee narrateth the Word of the Lord.'(Raag Sorath Mohalla 5, p-629)'Whatever the Lord hath instructed me, Hear, O my brother.' Raag Tilang Mohalla 9, p-727)

The tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh Ji established the same truth that it was God's Word that was being revealed through the Gurus:

'Whatever the Lord sayeth to me I say the same to the world.' (Guru Gobind Singh Ji )

Guru Granth Sahib Ji was not written by the devotees after the Gurus had gone, but it was dictated and compiled by the Gurus themselves. Thus it is the Authentic Divine Scripture. No body is allowed to change even a comma or a period out of 1430 angs (pages). The Seventh Nanak's son, Ram Rai, changed the meaning of only one verse to please the Emperor, Aurangzeb, upon which he was excommunicated for ever by his father (the Seventh Nanak), thereby establishing the fact that no one could ever change the God's Word, the Gurbani.

Guru Granth Sahib Ji is numerically structured which acts as a central locking system. The numerical system ensures that no-one can add their own hymn or Bani into the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The poetic beauty of Guru Granth Sahib ji ensures that no person can add an extra word to the Guru Granth Sahib, which would disrupt the flowing poetry. The Tenth Nanak made five copies of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji which he dictated and signed. One Volume was taken by Ahmed Shah Abdali and the whereabouts is unknown. However the other four Volumes are preserved at the Takhat Sahibaans (Sri Hazoor Sahib, Sri Patna Sahib, Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib, & Sri Kesgharh Sahib).

Max Arthur Macauliffe, an English writer, delivered a speech at Akal Bunga, Amritsar in 1899:

"There is another point to the merit of the Sikh religion that the founders of other religions in this world never wrote even one line with their own hands. You might have heard that there was a very famous Greek philosopher called Pythagoras who had many followers, but he never left behind anything written by him from which we could have known about the principles of his sect. After him came the second Greek philosopher named Socrates who was born in 500 B.C. He became a very famous religious leader who claimed that he was receiving Divine instructions from God within himself, which persuaded him to do good and prohibited from doing any evil deeds. But he too never left anything behind written by him which could have shed light on his philosophy and its principles. Whatever we know about him, has only come through the writings of his follower, Plato. Besides there came Mahatma Buddh in India and he never wrote anything with his hands. Then came Christ who did not write anything himself either. His teachings are only known through the Bible which was written by others. Then came Muhammad who was illiterate who also did not write down anything. However the Sikh Gurus acted quite opposite to all these religious leaders that they themselves dictated their message of Truth and compiled Guru Granth Sahib. In this respect the Sikh religion is far ahead than others."
