The Buddha Dal (army of veterans) numbering 40,000 under the leadership of Jassa Singh Ahluwalia and Baghal Singh Dhaliwal marched towards Delhi in February 1783. After entering the city on March 11, 1783 they turned to the Red Fort to seize the property of the Afghans and Mughal chiefs. Jassa Singhs forces desired that their leader be put on the throne of Delhi. They stopped at the Diwan-e-Am (Emperors court) and Jassa Singh was led inside where he seated the throne and was proclaimed Badhshah Singh.
