After the fall of Banda Singh Bahadur an active persecution was kept up against the Sikhs, whose losses in battle had been great. All those who where seized had to suffer death, for they refused to renounce their faith. Significant rewards were offered for their heads. Such extreame persecution resulted in Sikh men, women and children escaping to the deserts of Rajputana or the forests of the Shivalik hills and the Lakhi jungle.
