Women of Sikh history.

Mata Bhago was born at the village of Jhabal in present-day Amritsar district of the Punjab, she married Bhai Nidhan Singh Varaich of Patti. A person of spiritual disposition she nevertheless trained in the art of weaponry.

When forty Sikhs, from the Malva region, having deserted their Guru returned to their village it was Mata Bhago Ji who chastised them for their despicable behaviour. She rallied the troops and set off towards Anandpur to meet with Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The deserters now thoroughly shamed also joined in and they met the enemy forces at a place now known as Mukhatsar. Mata Ji had exceptional leadership qualities as well as being a high spiritual avaasta (level). Guru Gobind Singh blessed those forty dead as the Forty Liberated Ones. He took into his care Mata Bhago who had also suffered injury in the battle. She thereafter stayed in the service of Guru Gobind Singh Ji as one of his bodyguards.
