Guru Angad Dev Ji and Guru Amar Das Ji had to pass very strict tests before they were accepted by the gurus as their successors. Guru Ram Das Ji kept up this tradition. In his early years Guru Ram Das Ji was known as Bhai Jetha Ji, and Bhai Jetha Ji's unflinching devotion and selfless service earned him the admiration of Guru Amar Das Ji. Once when asked in jest why he kept such a long flowing beard Guru Ji replied 'To wipe the dust of feet of such holy mean like yourself.'
