After Guru Amar Das Ji had bought the land near Goindwal for Rs.700 Guru Ram Das Ji started the excavation work for the construction of a sarovar (tank of water) in 1577. The work finished in 1589 by his successor Guru Arjun Dev Ji. Guru Arjun Dev Ji also contructed the Harminder Sahib (House of god) in the middle of the sarovar. The Sarovar and eventually the whole town of Ramdaspur became known as Amirtsar.
